FINE-ART

People ask me what type of photography I enjoy.  I usually respond with 'fine art'.  They then ask "What is 'fine-art'?"  Great question.  The Oxford Dictionary defines it as "creative art, especially visual art whose products are to be appreciated primarily or solely for their imaginative, aesthetic, or intellectual content".  Further, its primary purpose is to evoke emotions and to communicate an idea or message to the viewer.  Fine art is meant to be appreciated for its beauty and its ability to convey complex ideas, emotions, or experiences.  It is often characterized by a high degree of technical skill, attention to detail, and an emphasis on beauty and harmony.  It can be realistic or not, but it always tries to create a sense of harmony and balance in the way it looks.

In my search for fine art photography, I seek images that tickle the imagination.  It may take you a moment or two to understand what you're seeing.  Perhaps a bit mysterious, enigmatic, even haunting?  Hopefully they even evoke an emotion.  I hope you enjoy them.

EVOCATIVE FACES

I pretty much avoided photographing people until I met the famous photographer and teacher Sam Abel.  He taught me the fine art of street photography.  And I discovered the fun, and challenges, of photographing people.

SEASCAPES

I live on Whidbey Island in the Pacific Northwest, one of the most beautiful places on our incredibly beautiful planet.  So I've been fortunate to have been able to capture captivating seascapes, many right here on Whidbey Island and able to travel to other equally dramatic and beautiful places.

LANDSCAPES

I moved from Wisconsin to the Pacific Northwest in 1988.  I was completely taken by the mountains, especially the volcanoes.  I made it a goal to climb all five in my first year living in Washington.  Well... four out of five is still pretty good!
